Ab Exercise FAQ - Part 2

  • Evil Wheel safety tips:
I have recently started using the wheel (bought the incredibly vulgar looking Ab Force device, as no one carries the straight wheel here anymore) and am wondering on a few sensations that may mean required tweaks of form. First, is it normal to feel keeping the back rounded while the arms go overhead to be a bit counterintuitive, it almost feels like I am fighting a reflex of spine extension (I can keep it pretty rounded, and do not get back pain though) second, is it normal to feel strong muscle activity in the neck? I would not call it strain, but certainly vigorous effort, anything I should be revising or is it a positive side effect?

  • Evil Wheel: Every day?:
Can the evil wheel be used on a daily basis? I am planning on doing a couple of sets each night before I go to bed in an attempt to trim the waist a little. This would be in addition to the ptp routine (deadlift and side press, 2 x 5) done 4 days per week.

  • Evil Wheel: Transitioning from kneeling to standing.:
I really like the wheel for my abs but I am only able to do three from a standing position, if I do them from the knees I am able to do about 50. I wanted my reps to be somewhere in between. We have an old abdominal board and I stand at the lower end and adjust the height of the angle and use my wheel on it (the higher the angle the easier the lower the angle the harder) so I am able to hit my target number of reps. your thoughts on this?

  • How to do vacuums properly?:
I'm still a little confused on the vacuum aspect of Bullet Proof Abs. When I am doing vacuums, I am "pulling in" my abs and it doesn't feel like Pavel says it should in the book. I've got my glutes clenched, tongue against my front two teeth (as in power breathing). What am I missing?

  • Janda situps: How often?:
I'm a little confused on the frequency of the Janda sit-up... I assume that you can do them everyday if not brought to failure... do you have to wait a month to do another exercise such as full contact twists for the love handles?? I would like do Janda situps Mon. Wed. Fri. and Full Contact Twists Tues. Thurs. Sat... I don't think this will be over doing it. What do you guys think?

  • Janda situps: Proper form?:
I don't know if I'm doing the Janda sit-ups correctly. I just recently started doing them with a partner and it seems like whenever I push against my partners hands (behind my claves) the front of my thighs tenses up too. I was under the impression that you are not supposed to do this during the Janda sit-up. i know the hip flexors should be relaxed, but does that mean the whole front of the thigh (quadriceps) should also be relaxed and soft? if so, how do you make sure you're doing this right? I'd like to eventually own a Pavelizer but I can't afford it right now. So I figured since I have a workout partner I should be able to do perfect Janda sit-ups. Any suggestions?

  • Pavelizer: Feeling it in the hamstrings?:
When I do situps on the Ab Pavelizer I seem to feel it in my hamstrings more than my abs and afterwards my hamstrings feel like they got a better workout than my abs. Is this normal?
